The Arrow Season 4 Episode 2: The Candidate

Ollie and the team fight a group of H.I.V.E. members.  They take the group down, but Thea’s bloodthirstiness has Ollie worried. Jessica Danforth, one of Moira’s friends, decides to run for mayor.  Ollie and Thea are very hesitant to support her in this, since the life span for the last three mayors has been short. Felicity discovers she expected by Palmer Technologies’ board of directors to lay off many of Palmer Technologies’ employees. There she meets an up and coming employee named Curtis Holt.

There is an attempt of Danforth’s life. Lonnie Machin is a young former mobster is trying to get into good graces with Darhk, and he is behind the attempt. Darhk is not impressed one bit. Flashback to five years ago, ARGUS sends Ollie back to the island to infiltrate a group of armed men growing some sort of plants with slave labor.  Ollie succeeds in getting the armed men to accept him as one of them.

Lonnie Machin kidnaps Danforth’s daughter. Lonnie’s actions upset both Darhk and Captain Lance. Ollie and the team rescue her, but Thea lights Lonnie on fire. This fuels Ollie’s concerns about Thea’s behavior. Thea’s behavior also is instrumental in failing to convince Captain Lance that Oliver has taken a new approach. Felicity with Holt’s help finds another way to save the company, other than laying anyone off. Machin escapes in medical custody. Danforth bows out of the mayoral race. Laurel learns of the Lazarus pit.  Laurel and Thea plan to go to Nanda Parbat to resurrect Sara and help Thea. Ollie decides to run for Mayor.

Now for the Easter eggs. Curtis Holt is a version of Mr. Terrific, specifically the second Mr. Terrific, Michael Holt.  Mr. Terrific was a member of the Justice Society of America.  He is a genius and an Olympic level athlete. Like Curtis, he is an African American character. He has not inherent super powers, but uses his intellect and his gadgets he builds himself.

Lonnie Machin in the comics is Anarky. Anarky has been on both sides of the law, depending on the version of the character. This version is more of a villain. He is also primarily a Batman character.  H.I.V.E. was a villainous organization that plagued the New Teen Titans.  It is also the group that hired Deathstroke the Terminator to infiltrate and take down the New Teen Titans. In the comics Darhk is not connected to this organization.

This was a good lead up and set up for future storylines. Ollie’s worries are valid if you ask any fan of Batman. Green Arrow also ran for Mayor in the comics as well. Great story, I give this episode a B.
