On August 25th the producers of the CW’s Arrow and Flash released the first episode of an online animated series. The series is Vixen. Vixen is one one DC preeminent female super heroines of color. She is very well known in comic book circles, but would seem obscure to the mainstream.
She was created in 1981 by Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner appearing in Action Comics # 521. She is Mari McCabe, the African-American wearer of the Tantu Totem that gives her the powers of just about any animal. She has been a member of the Justice League, the Suicide Squad, and Checkmate (DC’s answer to S.H.I.E.L.D.). she has appeared on Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and an evil doppelganger version of her was in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. She also appear in the video games DC Universe Online and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes.
The new online animated series has been released on CW Seed, the CW’s digital platform programming arm. It exists in the same world as the Flash and the Arrow. Both characters make an appearance in the first episode. The question is will Vixen show up in the live action shows including the upcoming DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. If so will Megalyn Echikunwoke, the voice actress for the online series, be the one to portray her in live action. This is an exciting time to see so many superheroes get mainstream exposure.
