The second episode of the ninth series of Doctor Who is a continuation of last week’s episode. In this episode, the Doctor and Clara team up with one Arch-nemesis to fight two other Arch-nemeses. The planet they are on is the home planet of two of the Doctor’s greatest nemeses. We find out how the Doctor handled the knowledge of who the boy from last episode was.
Clara disguises herself as one of the Arch-nemeses. Their alliance with the other Arch-nemesis ends in betrayal. The Doctor tricks his enemies with compassion and intelligence into defeat. Once again we were proven that all hope was not lost. The villains did not take into account everything they were doing and it blew up in their faces. The Doctor knew what was going on and what he was doing. He saw the little flaw in the villain’s grand scheme.
Overall the message of the episode mirrors the message of all fifty years of Doctor Who, hope, compassion, and intellect defeat hate, ignorance, and brute force. This episode hinted the Doctor taking a darker path, which with the last few series fit. However, the Doctor proved to be on the side of the greater good, as always. This is definitely a great opening story arch for this new series. I give this episode a B+.
